Model Trains
Model railroading, also known as railway models or model trains, is the hobby of collecting and crafting miniature replicas of real or imagined trains and railways.
Scales of Model Trains
Model scale trains come in a variety of scales, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The most common scales are O, HO, and N.
O Scale is 1/48th the size of real life trains and is popular for its ability to create realistic details.
HO Scale is the most popular scale for model trains. It is 1/87th the size of real life trains and is considered to be a good balance between detail and affordability.
N Scale is 1/160th the size of real life trains and is popular for its small size, making it ideal for tight spaces.
Model Train Supplies
To get started with model railroading, you’ll need a few basic supplies. You’ll need track pieces, locomotives, rolling stock (cars), scenery items such as trees and buildings, power supplies, and control systems. You can find many of these items in our online hobby shop. You’ll also find a diverse range of components, like track, locomotives, rolling stock, buildings, figures, and scenery.
Model Railroading Resources
For those looking to take their model railroad layout to the next level, there are many resources available to help you learn more about the hobby and build your skills. There are books on model railroading techniques, magazines dedicated to the hobby, clubs that meet regularly to discuss topics related to model railroading, and websites with helpful information on building layouts and running trains.
Train Hobbyist
Model train hobbyists come in all ages and can enjoy their pastime either solo or in a club. These groups are the perfect place for individuals to meet others with a similar interest, show off their work, and take part in exhibitions and competitions.
Model trains provide a fun and stimulating activity for both kids and adults. With the ability to be creative and practice problem-solving, these miniature worlds can be designed and built by nearly anyone, from beginners to experienced enthusiasts. No matter your experience level, model trains offer something for everyone.
